ABOUT SAN DIEGO CIVIC YOUTH BALLET

Founded in 1945, San Diego Civic Youth Ballet has been the resident classical ballet school in Balboa Park for over 75 years - offering affordable, year-round, high-quality classes and productions for dancers ages 4 to adult in the beautiful Casa del Prado.  The organization provides over 500 students with daily ballet classes, produces ballet productions for over 20,000 patrons each year, teaches over 750 students offsite through the Outreach Program, and continues to operate in good financial health with a dedicated staff of full-time and part-time employees, as well as over 200 volunteers.

Each year, three major productions grace the Casa del Prado Theater stage including a full-length spring ballet, "Fairy Tales in the Park" (benefiting SDCYB’s Scholarship Program) and the holiday classic, "The Nutcracker."  There is also an annual school-wide Spring Showcase and the SDCYB Performance Ensemble (featuring advanced dancers) performs at special events throughout the community.  SDCYB offers ballet camps and intensives each summer and has offered the “Ballet for Me!” class for students with disabilities since 2015.  Relationships with school groups and Scout troops continue to develop through discounted tickets to ballet performances.

The mission of SDCYB is to provide the youth of San Diego with an opportunity to study, understand and appreciate, through education and participation, the art of ballet, and to enrich the cultural life of the community.  The Vision Statement reads: “San Diego Civic Youth Ballet believes everyone should have the opportunity to dance.  SDCYB strives to cultivate a learning environment based on integrity and trust and one that values diversity amongst its students, faculty, staff and patrons.  SDCYB promotes excellence in all endeavors and a spirit of service to the San Diego community through sustainable practices that prioritize a child’s desire to dance over their ability to pay.”
