Artist Enrichment

SDCYB is committed to developing the whole dancer and provides many extracurricular training and social opportunities to develop the skills and knowledge necessary for a career in the arts.

Master Class & Lecture Series

Education Goal: SDCYB offers annual opportunities for students and parents to explore the world of ballet, ensuring preparedness for its challenges.

Master Classes: These classes, taught by skilled instructors from around the country, encompass various dance forms such as Flamenco, Modern Dance, Hip Hop, and Broadway. Renowned instructors like Tiler Peck (New York City Ballet), Ashley Wheater (Joffrey Ballet) and Jamar Roberts (Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater) have enriched our students' learning.

Lecture Series: Covering essential dance-related topics like Music Appreciation, Injury Prevention, Nutrition, College Dance and Conservatory Programs, and Dance Careers, our Lecture Series equips students with vital information to pursue a ballet career.

Pre-Professional Division

Purpose of Pre-Professional Division: To give dedicated students who wish to pursue ballet in college and/or pursue a professional career in dance the opportunity to fully reach their goals.

Eligibility: Eligibility for the Pre-Professional Division will be determined by the Artistic Director and Artistic Programming Manager, in consultation with other SDCYB teaching faculty. Students will attend required and optional classes, attend all meetings, lectures and master classes, and participate in all ballet productions.

Apprenticeships
& Class Aiding

Apprenticeships: SDCYB offers upper-level dancers the chance to volunteer in various roles like marketing, administration, costuming, and alumni programs. Gaining experience in these areas is valuable for those considering an arts career.

Class Aides: Upper-level dancers can assist lower-level classes by demonstrating steps, maintaining order, and even performing with students. This fosters a strong connection with young students and provides valuable teaching experience.

Ballet Buddies

Peer Mentoring: Ballet Buddies pairs younger students with older dancer "buddies," maintaining the same connection throughout their SDCYB journey or until the older dancer graduates.

Cross-Generational Learning: This program helps younger dancers gain insights from their older counterparts and fosters relationships across age groups, creating lasting connections beyond the classroom. It offers valuable mentorship experiences for both younger and older dancers.

School-Wide Events: Throughout the year, school-wide events bring buddies together, providing opportunities to connect, interact, and bond over their shared love of ballet.
