San Diego Civic Youth Ballet offers a range of programs including classical ballet classes, programs for boys, homeschool students and dancers with disabilities, summer camps and intensives, as well as various artist enrichment opportunities.

Ages 4-6

Students ages 4-6 will be placed in a class according to age, regardless of prior ballet or dance experience.

Beginners (Ages 7 & Up)

New students with little to no previous ballet training will be placed in a beginning class according to age. We offer beginning ballet classes for ages 7 through adult.

Prior Training (Ages 7 & Up)

New students ages 7 and up with previous, recent ballet training will be placed in a level according to experience and abilities after attending a placement class with an SDCYB faculty member.

Registration

Completing and submitting an online registration form and signing the digital handbook does NOT enroll your student in any classes. Families MUST CALL OR VISIT OUR OFFICE to enroll in classes and pay tuition.

San Diego Civic Youth Ballet offers need-based scholarships to students and families experiencing financial hardship. To apply for financial aid, please email samantha@sdcyb.org to learn more about the application process and requirements.

SDCYB employs an online contact system to manage students and families. To participate in a trial class or enroll, students and families need to register in our system. Please see the instructions below for enrolling, based on the student's age.

Level Structures
Tiny Tots
In this level, students are introduced to age appropriate stretches, basic positions of the feet and arms, and ballet class etiquette. Ballet terminology is also introduced.
Pre-Ballet
In this level, barre-work is introduced, and students continue to learn basic steps and terminology.
Beginning Ballet
An introduction to ballet for beginning dancers ages 7-10, which includes stretching, terminology, and basic ballet steps.
Beginning Teen
An introduction to ballet for beginning dancers ages 11-18, which includes stretching, terminology, and basic ballet steps.
Level 1A

Building on the concepts learned in Pre-Ballet, level 1A introduces several new steps, and continues to focus on the concept of turn-out.

Level 1B

Students begin to work on placement and pelvic alignment. The length of the class increases from one hour to 90-minutes.

Level 2A

Students are introduced to turns, and placement of the head and upper body is emphasized. Students are encouraged to take two classes per week.

Level 2B

Students continue to work on turning, and learn many new steps. This level also emphasizes musicality, and focuses on pelvic alignment. Students are required to take two classes per week in order to participate in performances.

Level 3A

Correct pelvic alignment and turnout continue to be the focus of this level. Positions of the body are introduced. Students are encouraged to attend three classes per week and a pre-pointe class. Many dancers begin to do pointe work in this level.

Level 3B

In this level dancers work on strengthening their turns and jumps, and continue to work on alignment. Dancers enrolled in three technique classes are permitted to take a beginning pointe class.

Level 4

Students prepare for the pre-professional program, strengthening their pointe work and focusing on flexibility, alignment, and turnout. In this level dancers are encouraged to take a modern dance class.

Levels 5 & 6

The pre-professional program; these levels focus on preparing the dancers for a career in ballet. Pointe class must be taken twice a week in addition to four or five technique classes. Dancers learn advanced turning and jumping combinations, and placement and alignment is expected to be correct. Performance quality is also emphasized.

Boys Classes

An introduction to ballet for boys ages 7 and up, which includes stretching, terminology, and basic ballet steps. Turns, jumps, and strengthening exercises are emphasized. Students are encouraged to take an additional technique class.

Adult Beginning Ballet

A fun, beginning-level ballet class open to ages 18 and up. This class is a great way to get some exercise, while learning the basics of ballet.
